Google & Baidu for Business and Education
IN CHINA, RICH ENTREPRENEURS PREFER to use Baidu.com rather than Google for Internet searches, according to a survey conducted by Chinese magazine Hurun Report in end 2006. Respondents apparently include some 600 Chinese entrepreneurs with a personal net worth of 10 million renminbi ($1.2 million) or more. In sharp contrast, S.G. Cowen found that in the U.S., people who use Google are more likely to have household incomes above $60,000 than people who use competing search engines. (Source: NetworkWorld)
In fact, according to recent Bloomberg statistics, as quoted in a New York Times report in September 2006, Baidu alone has captured almost 60 percent of the search engine market and around 50 percent of the online advertisting revenue in China.
Interestingly, the same New York Times report noted, “In September 2001… Baidu.com… looked almost exactly like Google’s no-frills home page. And even before Google did it, Baidu allowed advertisers to bid for ad space and then pay Baidu every time a customer clicked on an ad. Small and medium-size companies loved it, the site became deluged with traffic and Baidu turned a profit in 2004.”
Besides Baidu Search (which is similar to Google Web Search), the services provided by Google and Baidu (and Baidu Union members) have moved far beyond Internet searches to a number of rather advanced offerings which range from blogs and maps to databases and advertisements (more details in the Course Outline below). Baidu’s most popular feature, by the way, is its multimedia search (”MP3 Search”) and its Baidu 500 is a comprehensive listing of popular Chinese music.
