My account was disabled too for no reason. I tried to appeal the decision and they refused to help. My plan of action is to send an email with Facebook copied on the email to their top advertisers and let them know about the unfair decisions of Facebook.

Facebook deleted my account because I was supporting a bill in arizona that cracks down on Illegal aliens. no warning no email they deleted my account . I posted on the gov. of arizonas page please sign the bill next thing Im deleted.

Also, be aware that the IRS is using many social networks to find and contact people who are being audited. However, that does not mean that they are the ones contacting you through those sites, so be aware of phonies. I have an audit client here in LA that truly believes he was located through his social networking habits. This may be urban folklore, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

Thank you for your detailed description of this scam. Typically, facebook has been hijaked by the usual culprits, who are now making it a “not so fun / safe / good” environment to be in. I’m starting to think that the web is like a “rough” housing estate – the reality is that it’s likely to be a small minority of idiots who cause the vast majority of problems. I think there should be an international register of “banned” people, who will not be permitted to open accounts, sign up for broadband connections or rent server space. Difficult to implement? Where there’s a will – there’s a way.

i just got disabled this morning. i sent an email to disabled@facebook.com. i cannot see any reason as to why i have been disabled. i am extremely disappointed. i have had this account for over a year and have been using it for mostly apps. there are so many games i have been playing and now it is all gone. i have never talked bad to anyone, did anything sexual, or even spammed. i really hope they email back telling me why i got disabled. its ridiculous.

Most people just cannot help themselves when they get engrosed in Facebook. They think they are only talking to a friend and nobody else can see or read what they are saying.
I don’t have a problem with anyone getting caught for something they have committed. It’s not a nice feeling when you wake in the morning and someone has been through your bedroom while you were asleep.

I saw a similar ad the other day for a “Free $500 Cabela’s Gift Card” – the ad was even using an official Cabela’s trademark. Of course once you click in they state that they are not at all associated with said company…

The gift card comes after completing 5 “third party offers” and agreeing to receive phone call solicitations from who knows who, and a slew of other vague “requirements”.

I’m a little surprised this stuff is slipping through the cracks on FB, it would never get through editorial approval at Google or Yahoo…

well I have joined the group of folks who have had their fb accounts disabled. No idea why or explanation, fit in the category of “average joe” less than 100 friends post a couple of times a day, about 20 family, pets, vacation pics posted, do not flame others. For some mysterious reason fb cut me off, now just waiting for them to review my emails and hopefully reinstate my account.

I, too, received an invitation to become a fan of this group and I immediately smelled a rat. It’s all too easy to click to get something “free”…what company would do this on facebook, where it would get overwhelmed with people who wanted to take advantage of such an offer?

I got as far as the first step and thought, “nuh uh, no way!” I thought I’d research it first and found your blog. I won’t be fanning that page at all now, thanks for the information!

Good point, Rinaz. For a moment, I did entertain the thought that maybe FB might charge a nominal fee.

However, I’ve just found a Telegraph report through a Google search where FB flatly deny any such plans.

Sometimes it’s mind-boggling. So much information everywhere. We probably need Superman’s x-ray vision to see through scams and such.

Whats interesting is that there are a lot of gullible people who joins in groups without checking it properly.

The most glaring one would be the “Keep Facebook free” group that claims that facebook will charge money for its use in April, when facebook has never given any official notice that it will do so.

The basic reason accounts are being continuously dumped on facebook is because the system is completely overloaded now. They have expanded as much as they can, i.e. servers, etc. So those with tons of pics, videos, etc – so they dump accounts. Hence the ‘adding friends too fast’, too many messages in one day warnings. They just can’t handle the volume of activity any more, but will never admit to this.
This is the fix-all for an overloaded facebook.
Other sites do it as well. They do a mass dumping.
It sucks, but that’s the way it is.

Hi, Why is my facebook account disabled? I tried to log on to my facebook account and they gave me a message that my account had been disabled. I know I did not violate any of the terms of use. It’s been nearly three weeks know that my facebook account has been disabled mistakenly it’s still not fixed yet I have contacted the disable team as mansion on the massage I sent email to them several time to disabled@facebook.com but I did not had any reply from facebook disable team. I don’t think that social networking has changed politics. It is just a communications tool – it is still up to people to use them to communicate.

Obama’s election win wasn’t won on his social media skills alone. It was won by his ability to put forward a vision. Voters subsequently decided that they preferred his vision more than the other candidates.

Granted social media helps a lot but it really is no different to any other medium of communication.

Hi, Eric. I don’t think you can turn off the comment notification in Facebook.

However, from my observations notifications are sent to you and me only for up to 7 or so comments. After that, the notifications stop… that is until you start adding a comment and then the cycle starts again.

Hey J.K – Let me challenge you on your words!

This is a certainly human posting, and what I think you have missed out on massivly is the combined impact of Social Media combined with SEO.

A public, social media (such as your blog) is, and I’m guessing, getting about 75-85% of it’s traffic from the search-engines. Without that traffic your blog would obviously loose alot of it’s readers – Not because of your content, but because of your SERP positioning.

Posting comments (like mine), even though it “makes zero” is actually social media at it’s core. It’s about sharing, it’s about sharing linklove and it’s about giving traffic to other bloggers who can increase the social media sphere even more. Your links empowers the SERP positions for other people.

Think about it! Really looking forward your response.

Now as much as I would like to say that Facebook and other social networks should be left to their main purpose and not to be used for crime solving I really can’t do that…social networks like Facebook have become part of our daily lives…and as such are a good instrument for solving crimes, finding missing persons etc. and I believe that people should use whatever they can get their hands on if it solves crimes and helps people…the only thing is that I am afraid what will such sites turn into if…cause people come to the virtual world so they can feel more free than they do in the real world…and if they lose that extra sense of freedom..well I don’t think they’ll be coming back anymore…

Facebook may lead to crime busts, but some police abuse it too. I remember a few months ago, British police brought a SWAT team (including a helicopter) to break up a casual barbecue because Facebook led them to believe it was going to be some wild rave party.

I thought I heard about this happening every once in awhile. But I didn’t realize it was happening on a weekly basis. Haha, I guess thieves and crooks need to wisen up a bit.

Same here Nina I really love the Facebook social networking. I was once a Friendster addict too but then as I’ve heard about Facebook I try to register. I was not wrong, Facebook is really great, I really enjoy some of their application most especially the Pet Society I’m a big fan of that.

I think facebook should be left alone to function how it was meant to – to provide communication between friends, family and to allow business to provide information to customers. Surly using it as a way to stop crime takes away the fun, friendly atmosphere. Maybe a separate platform should be developed.

Facebook seems faceless to me in relation to the robotic effects of FARCEbook trying to protect themselves from what their farcebots consider is ’spam’. One might have thought that people would use the same message on a large portion of friends saving time on re-writing BUT not FARCEbook who see it as a dangerous action. Sadly their farcebots can’t tell the difference from adverts and social connectivity of human beings – though one could think that checking up on private messages sent to friends to invite them to connect fell outside the scope of control and into the scope of privacy.
Of course don’t get me started on someone being disabled not getting the right of reply – defending themselves with being able to collect their history and not knowing what the hell they’ve been ‘disabled’ – ‘crippled’ – cut off or whatever else you’d like to call it. I don’t know if anyone’s read Franz Kafka ‘The Trial” but it certainly seemed poignant to me FARCEbook appears very Kafkaesque. Faceless farce book!

I think there is a bit of a chicken/egg question here as well. Companies that are most likely to actively engage in social media are also already aware of the importance of customer service and listening to/connecting with customers (Southwest Airlines comes to mind). These companies already “get it” when it comes to creating relationships with their customers and probably would still be growing their market share even if there were no such thing as online social media. It’s another tool for good companies to connect and speak to their customers.
