Scammer Spoofing My Email Address

6 Jan 2008 (Sun)

FYI: THAT WAS NOT ME. Some Internet scammer started spoofing my NUS email address (blanked out below) while send out some crappy marketing messages. And I received one of them last night:
Email scammer

I’m continually amazed by how low (or high) spiritually one can get! However, this shall be as far as I would go… lest the vitriol in me get brewed into hatred and I end up joining the Dark Side (just as Luke Skywalker almost got seduced by his Darth Vader father in Star Wars).

As Eleanor Roosevelt put it: “It’s far better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.”

Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do about it. Things are worst in the U.S. where spamming is illegal and so you use somebody else’s email address to spread Viagra and penis enlargement affiliate links. :)

I can understand somewhat when people use dummy email addresses to send such messages. But to use real people’s email addresses is really despicable.

“Do unto others what you’d like them to do unto you.” This golden principle upheld in Confucianism, Christianity and I’m sure, lots other religions/philosophies, is violated.

In addition, since I’ve hardly used my NUS email address on the Internet, I can only think of two sites on the Net where my email privacy or security is breached. And one of them is FaceBook, by now infamous for its numerous hackers.

As an email marketing manager, this is the kind of stuff that makes me groan. This is something legitimate marketers have to combat all the time.
