Q: What’s so great about Baidu?

A: It is at least as good as Google.cn in search, has official support as a local entrant and is the first mover in Chinese search. No magic bullet, just critical mass and good management.

There is one intresting news for you !!! CHINESE BLOGGER KESO published an interesting series of articles discussing Baidu.com and four of its competitors: Google China, Sina, Tencent QQ, & Alibaba. This has made me very curious: What’s so great about Baidu?

chinese search engines are really complex and they don’t really give the desired reulst for the keywords i had tried so but baidu is really good as far as search engine conserned

Mark and Walter, you may want to try:

Using translate.Google.com to translate a Chinese page: the translation is not perfect, sometimes even way off. But it would at least give you some idea of what has been written on a page.
Changing the Translate Settings on your Google toolbar (if you have one and can read Chinese): Then you can brush up on your Chinese vocabulary daily while using the Web.
Listening to the podcasts on ChinesePod.com: It supports many different levels, from Newbie and
Elementary to Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. I’ve been told by an Indian friend that he finds it very useful.

Do you have any suggestions about the best way to learn mandarin? I know China will play a huge role in the global economy’s future and I want to speak the language. Ideas?

Hey Clapping Trees,

I have added you on my blogroll as I found your blog pretty interesting and possibly useful to my readers (errr… maybe the more serious ones… LOL). We may have a chance to meet perhaps at a Ping gathering or some other event in future. Baidu is truly something though I haven’t really checked it out yet since I am…almost Chinese illiterate.
