Web 2.0 vs. Web 1.0

4 Sep 2006 (Mon)

A neat summary of Web 2.0 by a student in Edublogs.org, giving many concrete examples:

Web 1.0 vs. Web 2.0

Afternote 05-04-2007: Shortly after posting this, I found out that the above list was actually taken from a 2005 article by Tim O’Reilly. Here’s just a note to clarify this.

According to Mr O’Reilly, characteristics of Web 2.0 include:

  1. Web as Platform
  2. Harnessing Collective Intelligence
  3. Data is the Next Intel Inside
  4. End of the Software Release Cycle
  5. Lightweight Programming Models
  6. Software Above the Level of a Single Device
  7. Rich User Experiences

And here’s a compact definition from Wikipedia:

“Web 2.0, a phrase coined by O’Reilly Media in 2004, refers to a perceived second-generation of Web-based services—such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies—that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users. O’Reilly Media used the phrase as a title for a series of conferences, and it has since become widely adopted.”
