Wilderness in Information Age
11 Jul 2005 (Mon)On 4 Feb 2005, Ulises compared the Las Vegas Strip with the Red Rock Canyon Park (”a mere 17 miles apart and yet two different planets”) and quoted Bill McKibben’s words in The Age of Missing Information:
“[W]hat sets wildneress apart in the modern day is not that it’s dangerous (it’s almost certainly safer than any town or road) or that it’s solitary (you can, so they say, be alone in a crowded room) or full of exotic animals (there are more at the zoo). It’s that five miles out in the woods you can’t buy anything. There’s no way to drive someplace and spend some money…”
I’m more inclined to think that “wilderness” in the Information Age looks like this: “It’s that five miles out in the woods you can’t sms, blog, “Del.icio.us”, “Furl”, “Flickr” or “Avantgo” anything. There’s no way to go some place and kill some time in cyberspace…” ![]()
