“I only wish to share what I’ve learned – the very simple fact that it is right for a gull to fly!” — Jonathan Livingston Seagull
Hi! My first name is “Joo Khim” and my surname is TAN. You can also call me JK, Joo or Josephine. I graduated with an Information Systems degree from the National University of Singapore many years ago. Over the past few years, I have completed with flying colors all the requisite courses for a Masters in Instructional Design & Technology program (in the National Institute of Education).
Currently, I provide training and consultancy on subjects of my passion and research — the cost-effective use of teaching methodologies and free/libre software to facilitate learning among students and working adults.
I have worked as Assistant Director (Instructional Design) in Nanyang Technological University; Tutor (Engineering Communication) for an Australian degree program; Instructional Designer/Technologist in Ngee Ann Polytechnic; Web Editor in Hewlett Packard Education Services, Asia Pacific; Manager (Technical Communications) in Creative Technology Ltd; Journalist in Singapore Press Holdings; and Systems Analyst in the National Computer Board (now known as National Computer Systems). I have also served as President (Singapore chapter) for three years in the Society for Technical Communication (STC).
Accolades that I’ve received over the years include:
Anonymous feedback via NTU CCE:
“Very good class with a good balance between theory and hands on experience.”
“The course is great. Learnt a lot and what’s really good is the depth and hands on experience.”
“Very good class with a good balance between theory and hands on experience.”“The course is great. Learnt a lot and what’s really good is the depth and hands on experience.”“Very good introductory course into the world of web analytics.”
“Very useful tips, will really like to try it out and hope my co. website traffic will improve thereafter.”"Very good introductory course into the world of web analytics.”
“Very informative… learning lots of new terms… easily processed visual information.”
Ms Daisy Yeo, Deputy Director, OHR, Nanyang Technological University, 2007:
“I have learnt a lot today; shortcuts to what I have been doing through longer surfing in net and blog. Definitely will help to improve in our work. Got to take time to digest and review and practise so as to be familiar with the features and to use them often.”
Mr John Seah, Managing Director, Everest Innovation, 2007:
“I hired Joo Khim to create my website www.everesti.com and she did a fantastic job in transforming my old “for-your-information-only” website into an interactive website which attracts a lot more hits and generated lots of customers queries, resulting in more sales. As a professional, Joo Khim focused both on details and results. She is highly technically competent and provides quick response to my needs. I am using her again for my next e-business project and I highly recommend her to anyone in search of a great internet coach / consultant / web designer/ builder.”
Ms Jill Nicholson, Lecturer (Engineering Communications), University of Technology, Sydney, 2007:
“Joo Khim has acted as tutor for Engineering Communication for the past five years. In all this time Joo Khim has conducted herself, in her teaching and her relationship with the students, with great maturity and ability. She is an excellent tutor and has brought many innovative ideas to the course. Joo Khim is reliable and always has her assessments completed within the required time frame. I recommend Joo Khim as a talented, capable and reliable tutor.”
Distinguished Chapter Service Award from STC, 2004:
“In recognition of your exemplary efforts revitalizing the Singapore chapter and continuing selfless contributions to chapter growth.”
Ms Rahel Anne Bailie, President, Intentional Design Inc. and STC Region 7 Director-Sponsor (2002-2006):
“During the time that I was on the board of the Society for Technical Communication as the Director/Sponsor for Region 7, I connected with Joo Khim (Josephine) on a regular basis as the president for the Singapore Chapter. She is a dynamo, who manages to come up with new and inventive ideas, and get them implemented. Before anyone in STC was doing online conferences in North America, Joo Khim put the STC together with the Ngee Ann Polytechnic and had a conference with an online component, inviting speakers from China and North America. I would work with her again, if the opportunity arose.”
Ms Bailie, Region 7 Director-Sponsor Award from STC, 2002-2003:
“For your contribution toward the 2002 IDEA (Information Design in the Electronic Age) conference, and the use of technology to add online seminars to the complement of sessions.”
Mr Kiang Tzy Peng, Manager, Teaching & Learning Centre, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, 2002:
“I have found her to be a very independent and conscientious worker. Her key strengths are in the areas of academic research and writing which she has demonstrated most ably in the projects which she undertook, specifically in the development of a case-based knowledge resource for academic staff (ESPRIT Knowledge Portal) and through her contributions as a participant in an external training program on instructional design for eLearning. Her attention to detail makes her a meticulous worker.”
Dr Saul Carliner, Fellow & International President (1995-1996), STC; Assistant Professor, City University of Hong Kong, 2002:
“[Her] leadership… During her three-year tenure as president of the Singapore chapter of the STC, the chapter has experienced growth in membership, strong programs, and the successful launch of the IDEA conference. She has led these efforts independently, with little or no support from the organization’s office near Washington DC. If anyone in the region wants to learn about technical communication, Joo Khim is the person to contact.”
Mr Jayanath Perera, Vice President, System Integration Products, Eutech Cybernetics Pte Ltd, 2002:
“I have had the privilege of serving on the committee, under her leadership since May 2000. During the three years… I have been able to observe many facets of her leadership skills. She has been able to inspire my fellow committee members to give of their time and serve the profession with much zeal. Given the busy lifestyle of those in the high tech industry, this is no insignificant achievement. Although she is gentle by nature, she does not fear to stand firm when the situation demands it. By doing so, she has been able to ’stem the rot’ and see us through many a difficult period. I have also observed her to be an inexhaustible source of ideas when coming up with activities that count toward professional development.”
Ms Neo Chia Reei, General Manager, General Electric Company of Singapore, 1995:
“This is the first time I am reading IT Singapore and I am quite impressed by the contents. I especially enjoyed reading your article on lady bosses and their IT tools. It is good to know what others are doing.”
Mr Peter Tio, Manager, Information Services Division, Government of Singapore Investment Corporation, 1994:
“My company is currently in the process of re-looking at our network strategy, having grown quite quickly over the last couple of years. Ethernet switching is one option we are considering to increase the performance on our Ethernet backbone. The article was interesting and provided me with a quick understanding between switches and routers… keep up the good work your magazine is doing in bringing IT news to Singapore.”
Mr Patrick Lau, Manager, Computer & Information Systems Unit, Ministry of Information & the Arts, 1992:
“Her technical competence, dedication to her work and drive to achieve high quality work paid much dividends in the following areas:
- Assisted in conducting a strategic information systems study in 1991;
- Implementing and supporting the Ministry-wide electronic mailing system since May 1991;
- Assisted in the development of an application system;
- As project leader in scoping the requirements for a project for National Museum;
- As the standards officer for the department and successfully completed some standards for application development teams.
“I have no doubt Joo Khim will thrive well in any environment that is technically stimulating.”
